MaximsNewsNetwork: 25 September 2009 - UNTV: United Nations: Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas says that "time is running out" to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and cautions that the settlement policy pursued by Israel "will abort opportunities to relaunch the peace process."
The third day on the General debate got underway today (25 September) with an address by the long time leader of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe.Mugabe reminded the General Assembly of the the power sharing agreement reached last year with one-time rival Morgan Tsvangarai and the formation of a unity government last February and regretted that western countries, particularly the United States and the European Union have refused to remove illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe.

Lebanons President, General Michel Sleiman told the Assembly that the international community must step up pressure on Israel to fulfil its obligations to the Middle East peace process. Sleiman put in doubt the international communitys ability to force Israel to halt its settlement construction, to lift the unjust siege on Gaza, and to stop the judaization of Jerusalem.

Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of Somalia spoke about his countries struggles, including piracy and terrorism and said that if the world does not comprehend the gravity of what is happening in Somalia, there is a danger of trouble spilling beyond its borders.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari placed a framed picture of his late wife Benazir Bhutto on the podium and said that in Pakistan the will of the people has prevailed as it has entered into a new era of democracy, rule of law and human rights.

The Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas said that "time is running out" to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and cautioned that the settlement policy pursued by Israel may abort opportunities to re-launch the peace process.

President Denis Sassou-Nguesso of Congo-Brazzaville welcomed the significant progress observed recently in the nations among the Great Lakes region, including the warming of relations between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, the revitalization of the Economic Community of the Great Lakes countries and the normalization of relations between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo which he said reflect the common will of the Great Lakes countries to work to consolidate peace.
