They are laughing because they cant believe they are actually listening to one of the best story tellers in recent history, and that hes actually addressing them, in person, right in front of their eyes.

Its their way of saying " OMG I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!". I know the feeling, being in the presence of an amazing author.

Why am I born in Italy???!!!! phew! They laugh and I don't understand why! I love Neil Gaiman,it's so frustrating...

They laugh because Neil projects an infectious sense of joy and easy laughter when he is doing a reading. I have been to a few and each one is a joy. We laugh as a compliment to him as a person.
