Washing soda is chemically known as sodium carbonate. It is also referred to as soda ash or soda crystals. Washing soda is a sodium salt obtained from carbonic acid and is found in the form of a white powder. It is mostly found in a crystalline form as a heptahydrate (with seven molecules of water). When exposed to air, it loses the water molecules to form a monohydrate. When it dissolves in water, it is broken down to release ions of sodium and carbonate.

Let's have a look at some of the main uses of washing soda.
Sodium bicarbonate is the chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. Because it has long been known and is widely used, the salt has many other names including sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium bicarb, baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda, bicarb soda, saleratus or bicarbonate of soda.

It is soluble in water. This white solid is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. It has a slight alkaline taste resembling that of sodium carbonate. It is a component of the mineral natron and is found dissolved in many mineral springs. It is also produced artificially.
