@lionsgate12345 - I remember my parents' watching this show on Friday nights when I was a boy. I definitely remember that theme song (didn't know till later that the orchestra of the great Count Basie either wrote or at least played it).
It should be mentioned that the creators of "Police Squad", who clearly got the inspiration from "M Squad", got the inspiration for doing "Airplane!" from a film called "Zero Hour!", which features characters and plot lines that are exactly like the ones in "Airplane!" (only it's not done for laughs).

By the way, M Squad, the entire series, is available on DVD.

Any resemblance between this opening and "Police Squad" is purely intentional.

Now I understand what inspired the comic series Police Squad. Even the theme song is similar.

@Hickey66 There was another short-lived show from the mid-sixties called "Coronet Blue" that also featured a cool Jazz/Pop score.

ThermidorReleasing thank you. I'm 63 and remember M Squad in the UK when I was 14. It has always been with me. Thanks.

I never forgot watching this show as a kid.
It was always black, moody and rainy and
Lee Marvin, well, he was plain amazing as an actor. He brought realism
and grit to the screen. And that cool jazz music-just WOW!
