you all saying this man didnt have lessons? I dont understand how he can learn to play this music like this. It sounds impossible. My boy been taking lessons for 5 years this just sounds like this man was born playing. I cant hardly believe this can happen. Sound like the lord touch his hands.

My impression is that Renardy had something that sort of bridged the esthetique of and sonority of Kreisler and Heifetz, something of both and yet very unique. His recordings of the Paganini caprices (which he had played all 24 in a recital) is unsurpassed in my estimation. A tragedy that he died so young.

I followed this performance along with the music and I must say--I was more impressed than ever at Renardy's detail--his close attention to dynamics, cresendo's (his feel for whether they should ebb gently or be rather fast) He missed not one detail! Renardy POUNCES on the beginning of each note in the bar--Heifetz does the same "pounce" (Heifetz does an amazing Brahm's VC at remarkable speed) other artist tend to allow the note from the last measure trace into the new bar..losing fire.

Awesome!!! What an experience:-) Refreshing it must have been for him as it's for me:-)!!!!

I have some clarification on this recording after a visit to Amazon--they have both recordings on one CD, the Munch and the Furtwangler--it was Furtwangler who insisted on one mic. I want to get this CD so I can compare the performances. They were able to greatly clarify the violin since they could separate the track of the violin in the Munch version (the sample sounded really good) The F. will still be difficult to hear the detail of the violin..curses!

Also the concert community was "expectant here--wanting him to out perform Heifetz...there was much arguing over the microphone placement and finally the fatal mistake where only one mic was used, (this argument apparently was heated and lasted all day prior to the performance) He was 28 and this was his first full VC, not to mention he had suffered battle fatique..he must have been a wreck...esp. hearing you are expected to exceed Heifetz.

I think the what he has lived through is brought forth in his playing...listen to the pathos and feeling...the warmth and compassion. He absolutely emotes human feeling...he also got married about this time in his life, alot of emotional changes during this time of his life...bringing his financee home from Europe who had waited many years...I think all of this is heard in his expressive playing here

I can't wait to hear the rest--despite what was described as having been a poor audio recording this isn't bad. This man was being compared to Heifetz--imagine the pressure he was under having just returned from WWII and hitting the concert circuit again after 4 years of shell shock.
I can't thank you enough! Who can imagine playing at Concertgebouw under Munch being essentially a self taught violinist? The thought is mind boggling!

When I really stopped to think about it, mind boggling yes, big time. And still he was right up there with so many great violinists who had the advantages of having studied with giants like Flesch, Auer, Hubay and Enescu, to name some of the legendary figures.
