  • Phil wrote this for a flowerlady in the neighborhood and it's beautiful and compassionate:

Never found their pot of gold, wrinkled hands pound weary holes.

Each line screams out you're old, you're old, you're old.

But nobody's buying flowers from the flower lady.

And the flower lady hobbles home without a sale.

Tattered shreds of petals leave a fading trail.

Not a pause to hold a rose, even she no longer knows.

The lamp goes out, the evening now is closed.

and nobody's buying flowers from ..

  • @villamondo Yes, and please provide us with "the Phil Ochs complete dvd collection"! Now!

  • @TheFilthyRags "There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone / And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone / And you won't find me singin' on this song when I'm gone / So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here" I don't know what Phil called himself, but that sounds like secular humanism to me, and I find it full of hope and compassion, not dangerous.

  • I prefer this raw version to the orchestrated one on "pleasures of the harbor." It is so wonderful seeing these videos of this man who was an inspiration to so many of us. Wherever these are coming from -- Please post more.

  • @bagup59 He was attacked in Africa, they slit his throat and ruined his voice. He lived but couldn't go on without his voice. Good book - Death of a rebel life of Phil Ochs. Props to America's best all-time songwriter.

  • I still play this on my guitar from time to time. One of the greatest songs ever written, in m opinion. If I could only write lyrics like these!

  • America's forgotten troubadour.

Be sure to catch the new film about him being released in early '11.

  • I love that I've found someone like Phil Ochs who CARED about something and fought for what he believed in and wrote great music. I hate that the one person who gives me hope and makes me want to keep on fighting, committed suicide. It's hard to hold on to hope in a world like this.
