The govenment is as much to blame as anyone, where else in the world do you see the police, local authorities and other goverment bodies driving foreign cars.

Firstly, had the gov had gone to rover and told them to get together with one of the british motorsport giants such as pro drive to produce a custom designed traffic car and lower spec panda which would be used by all forces, the initial order alone would have been huge, follwed by public sales! And thats just the police!

The problem with Rover was that it was British. The cars, in their day, were the cars of Doctors and (earlier) Solicitors, etc., i.e. the Prestige end of the market. But, as with all things British, unlike our ancestors, we seem to apologise to the world for making something good. Especially our press. The Rover 75 won Best Of Class, over and above marques like BMW, Mecredes, etc., but still couldn't save the company from our pathetic lack of patriotism ...

RIP, no matter what anyone say's the Queen used to drive a rover, now they are History and I love driving a piece of it.

yes and their dealerships are shite now rover has gone into admin bit of a shame because they were such nice places to go if you had a rover and needed help now its like you go in and they are sticking two fingers up at you like they dont care about rovers. I only went in to see if i could get a few small genuine parts and i said to them if you give me a saw i give you an arm and a leg as payment. Ridiculous.

I do think the demise of MG Rover is tragic, I would love to have industry back in this country again. There was always great pleasure on working on a car thinking 'well, at least it was all designed and made here,' but the best car to come out of BL was the Acclaim, which as you will know wasn't very 'Rover' at all.

I don't think its fair to blame people who don't rate Rover's highly for the collapse of MG Rover. A general consensus amongst people is that French cars are poor, yet France has one of the worlds most buoyant car markets. Both PSA and Renault are one of a few car manufactuers in the black at the moment.

The truth is,on the whole Rover built mediocre cars. Working as a mechanic, and an MOT tester, and most importantly having owned a Rover 800 in the past have made my opinion...
