"Why Me" by Drew Schmalz
MPLS Mission Trip 2010

Lyrics:
Dear God, there's some things on my mind
I'm reflecting on the life of an average white guy
All I did was be born, and I was dropped into a life
Where my parents showed me love and they raised me right
I had a family that so willingly provided for me
Gave me food shelter love, everything I could need
Gave me a pretty nice house and made me home cooked meals
And when I was 16 they gave me my first wheels
The examples that I had in my mom & dad
Had me stayin outta trouble knowing good from bad
I was raised in the Lord and went to sunday school
Where I learned the 10 commandments and the Golden rule
Didn't drink didn't smoke never did a thing wrong
Never felt no pain in my whole life long
Such a comfortable life, filled with peace & blessings
But I'm left sittin here and askin the question

Why me
What did I do right
To deserve this life
that you gave me
Why me
All that I can do
Is give thanks to you
and wonder
Why me

So I live my life, in this comfy little bubble
Hangin out with friends and never gettin into trouble
But suddenly I find that in my own town,
There's people gettin murdered just a few blocks down
A couple minutes away There's little kids in gangs
Dealin drugs on the street & feelin so much pain
So close to home, yet it's miles away
From the reality I've known up until this day
We got families in poverty, drug deals and robbery
To see the inequality, it breaks my heart and bothers me
Cause who's to say, I wouldn't be the same way?
If I was born into the lives in which these kids were raised?
See we're all just people, tryin to find our way
In the world that we live in, situations we face
So why me? I'm just a sinner like the rest
Lord don't get me wrong, I feel incredibly blessed but

Why me
What did I do right
To deserve this life
that you gave me
Why me
All that I can do
Is give thanks to you
and wonder
Why me

So where do I go from here
I see the injustice, the pain is so clear
But to bridge the divide is something I can't do
So the only thing I can do is give it to you
I gotta realize now that I'm a sinner too
Gotta know that just cause I don't do the things they do
Doesn't mean that I am perfect, cause we all fall short
Just gotta know that all the struggles of the world are yours
Gotta go to you, and gotta put you first
Give my heart and soul and trust that you'll do the work
Cause who am I to say that I am better than another
Gotta see us all as equals, as sisters & brothers
So the real privilege is to be your hands
And to do the work that nobody except you can
So God take my life, and use it as you will
Cause you've taught me so much but I'm askin still

Why me
What did I do right
To deserve this life
That you gave me
Why me
Now I have the chance
To make a difference
In this world
Why me
you have given me
an opportunity
To be your hands and feet
In humility
But it's still a mystery
Why me.
