This video clip demonstrates how high quality FM can be received using normal regeneration with my 3 Transistor VHF Superregenerative Receiver. The regeneration control must be reduced very slowly until oscillation just ceases. Any regenenerative detector with a suitable VHF FET transistor or Valve will also work this way providing the receiver is designed using VHF technology, That means short RF leads in the tuned circuits to avoid losses and instability such as tuning drift. The advantages of using this method rathar then using superregeneration is you are not radiating illegal interference and there is no background quench beat of the stereo sub carrier that results in distortion. When using this method of receiving FM, A very good outdoor antenna must be used unless you are receiving a very strong signal. The semiconductor lineup of this receiver used is a 2N3819 FET grounded gate untuned RF Stage. The superregenerative detector is a BF244A FET Self quenched oscillator. A BC548 AF Stage follows the final stage which is an LM380N Audio IC Power Amplifier. This receiver is now a construction project on my following webpage http://philsvalveradiosite.co.uk/philsvalveradiosite/progressivecrystalsettor... . It is also possible for this receiver to be upgraded to a pulse counting tuner by using the regenerative detector as an autodyne converter and with the addition of about 4 Silicon transistors for IF AMP and Limiter. A couple of silicon diodes would also be needed for a voltage doubling pulse counting detector. This would then be a transistor version of my successfull valve design which could also be pocket sized which has been recently proved. Also recent experiments have been tried with a stereo decoder and the seperation and sound quality is excellent. Please note that a very good outdoor antenna is needed if you intent to try stereo reception.
