Great casting! Lansbury and Harvey were the same age, I think, which makes it funny as she plays his evil mom.

I love the Lincoln lamp.

Impressive concentrated stuff.

She reminds me of my evil mother in law who brainwashed my bipolar wife to divorce me.

It's a terrible thing to hate your mother, but I didn't always hate her. When I was a child...I only kind of disliked her.

She indeed SHOULD have received an Oscar for this role... the remake pales next to the original!!!

@jckfmsincty ....co-leading role and played sympathetic character, Lansbury had much less screen time as mother from hell, one of the worst ever in cinematic history, actually. Academy loves to nominate actresses for playing villains, but not to award them (Judith Anderson in Rebecca, Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction etc.).

@jckfmsincty Lansbury was considered as a shoo-in to win that year. She won Golden Globe and NBR award, had an overdue factor (it was her third nom) plus she gave another great performance that year in another Frankenheimer movie All Fall Down. It was a huge upset when Duke won.
Though, it's not that surprising when you think about it now. The MIracle Worker got 5 Oscar noms including Best Picture, director, writhing and actress. Candidate got only 2 for Lansbury and editing. Duke had a huge...

@PeaceFan1 Lansbury was so terrific in this part, but she was nominated the same year Patty Duke won the Supporting Actress Oscar for "The MIracle Worker". It was just a matter of timing. In any other year, Lansbury would have won handily.
By the way Angela Lansbury turned down the role of Nurse Ratchet in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST because she 'couldn't bear her'. Louise Fletcher of course who got the part won an Oscar for best actress.
After Lansbury saw the movie she knew even more that she made the right decision and said that Louise Fletcher is a great actress and deserves her Oscar very much.

believe it or not, Lucille Ball was first considered for this part. The director really wanted her.....I am glad Angela got it. Chilling....

@minusthecat2010 Actually, John Frankenheimer was the one who wanted Lansbury and only Lansbury for the part. It's Frank Sinatra who wanted Lucille Ball.
