A National Geographic documentary about the fascinating and mysterious pre-Columbian Inca lost city of Machu Picchu. Deep in the Andean mountains lays a mysterious ruin named Machu Picchu. For 400 years it sat abandoned on its misty cliff, the quintessential lost city in the jungle. Rediscovered in 1911, it contained no written records or carvings, nothing that could shed light on its history. For a century since, it has defied the endless scores of visitors and scientists who attempted to understand its purpose. Who were the mysterious people who built it and why did they build it here? Today an international team of archeologists, engineers and scientists are finally piecing together the clues. Together they are discovering astonishing new burials, revealing the intricacies of its ingenious engineering and finally decoding the secrets of Machu Picchu.

  • People like Inca who learnt a lot from their environment, actually found the water filtration process. With heavy rain of water fall onto the land, Its not a surprise that Inca people knew how the filtration process works. They can observe and study the clarity level of water at the river. What more, they have been equipped with the same senses like ours. I think the archaeologists / scientists should study more on the purpose(s) of it's built. I suspect there are more secrets to be revealed.

  • I don't know, jeldermanger, everywhere I read on the web about the Inca empire, it lasted about or around 100 years (give or take). You can't include the pre-Inca peoples. So starting from Pachacutec's son, Tupac Inca's conquering in 1463 to 1572 when the last Inca stronghold fell, is close enough.

  • First of all the incan empire didn't last 100 years... from pre incan times to the spanish conquest more than 8 centuries went through, 22 known incas ruled the empire, second thing Pachcutec inca yupanqui was an inca named after the God Pachacutec (which means as they say in part 2 "the one who reshapes the earth") (Jesus) only son of the "sun" (God to them)

  • described in the real inca chronicles as a man with brown beard, a staff and a white robe, who came down directly from his father the sun and walked on top of the water, then ordered Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo (adan and eve) to build the empire blahblahblah they had like 7 sons and daughters blablabla which are kind of sacred and i dont remember their names and balblabla...

  • to resume, the snake often related to evil, the lion as the king of the earth (simbolizing Jesus) and the dove as the holy spirit are also portraited on the stone walls of many if not all of the incan temples, fortesses and cities as the frog, the puma (lion of the andes) and the condor...

  • well to resume my theory (this time for real) God presented Himself to all humans, as simple as that... and third of all, macchu pichu wasnt a fortress/ temple/ etc, etc... it was what spanish conquerors called El Dorado (which they've heard of and never found),

  • last inca Atahualpa was captured by Pizarro and he promised to give him 3 rooms like the one he was held on, filled with gold to the top if he let him go, the city of macchu pichu was filled with all of the incas treasures and gold,

  • macchu pichu was builted as the secret chambers of the incas, so the conquistadors never found the incas valuables. A city full of gold or el dorado, that is what brought the attention of hiram bingham, and that is what made him go to my country and take all the gold the spanish conquistadors couldn't find...

  • United States is a country founded on stealing, murdering, lying, etc, etc, just like Spain, along with most european countries, take the crusades for example... using God's name in vain, killing and stealing from other lands. Civilizations were always lost and still the same today (if you know what i mean), some more than others. We are all lost civilizations.
