TRANSCRIPT:
MCCAIN: "[...] challenges that we've never envisioned many years, some years ago. And I want to talk to you, just a minute, about the latest. I'm sure you where Iranian boats came out and threatened American ships in the Straits of Hormuz, an international water way. My friends, I'm proud of the President of the United States for many things. I'm proud of what the president said yesterday. My friends, this goes back to the earliest days of American history.

"One of the first conflict--the first conflict we were ever in after we achieved our independence was there was group called the Barbary pirates and they were capturing American ships and they were demanding tribute. We went and we took care of the Barbary pirates. The reason why we got into the war of 1812 was that the British--what they were doing.

"Throughout our history--in WWI--Germans were sinking American ships and the principle was the freedom of the seas. I am proud of the President of the United States and I want to tell you I will do whatever is necessary to preserve freedom of the seas and that is we're not gonna have American ships attacked and that is a fundamental principle of our adherence to international law."

"Let me give this straight to you, I'm not threatening war with Iran, I'm not saying that we're going to get into another conflict. Iran and every other nation has to understand that we will respect--make sure that everybody respects freedom of the seas."
