I worked at a flea market that was using the former Weston location about 10 years ago and was shocked by how big it was, deli fridges were about 800' long, they looked old and dirty like they were the originals from decades ago. I can see why Stavros sold them, it would have required too much money to fix up and he made somuch money over the years that he saw it as a good decision. I remember as a child shopping at the Cherry st terminal, nice memories,
The Dixie location went downhill fast in the 80's. I remember shopping there with my grandfather until just before they closed it (I think it was 2003-2004?). The aisles were dirty as hell, the checkouts looked like they hadn't been serviced in years, and the "produce"/vegetable section was housed in a separate section that looked like a warehouse. All the broken or damaged packaged food was stacked all over the place at the very back of the store - good times.
used to love the portuguese version of the knob hills commerical. the voice over used to be going off in the thickest portuguese language/accent, then all of a sudden he would say "mangoes 99 cents" in the most anglo voice u ever heard XD
Miss this place. I remember the day I shopped at the Cambridge terminal for the last time, 2 days before they shut it down for good. I walked around the entire store for about an hour and a half at least, buggy and all, grabbing whatever I needed that was left on the shelves, and reminiscing quietly. It was pretty sad too, because I knew how much I would miss shopping at KHF. Even the cashiers at the check-out counter seemed sad. Can't blame them. After all, they WERE losing their jobs. : (
The Pickering Knob Hill Farms (which, I think, was the first one) is now an Asian supermarket, and a DOT store. The mural above where the checkout lineups started is still there. It should be designated an historical artifact & permanently preserved. Shopping there was always an adventure. My parents still have some of the cardboard boxes (deposit 5 cents, 10 cents, 15 cents, 25 cents), & I have a plastic one. Nothing compares to what Knob Hill Farms was. I really miss it.
Used to go to the Knob Hills at Weston Rd and Hwy 401 in Toronto. It was a good store, very big, long aisles.
I just wish they had an express line, there wasn't any.

It was at Knob Hill Farms where I first saw COW TONGUE being displayed among the fresh meat section. International foods, indeed.
