I met John in Milwaukee in '63 and always loved to hear those guys play and raise hell. Back then we threw rent parties to afford the places we lived/survived in on the East side. God what a time! Dylan, I remember, commented on how much he loved the hell outa Dave's 12 string playing. I also introduced my wife to John many years later in Berkeley at the Freight and Salvage. He hadn't changed a bit ... still the same John.
I grew up in those coffeehouses and bars in Dinkytown and the West Bank.
I introduced my son to John and Willie last night at the Cedar.
Tony is also a great writer (of articles, books, etc.) These are not just great musicians, they are wonderful people. We miss Dave but thanks to his widow they found some forgotten 1963 tape they release on CD last night together with the funny, funky 1970 film "The Secret of Sleep" starring John and Willie.
I met Dave Ray when I recorded his last CD in late 2000. It was an honor working with him and still today his professionalism in the studio hasn't been surpassed. I recently found the masters in a box of things I hadn't seen for several years but cherish the actual CD as a memory and a treasure of an era long past. Dave did Bonnie Riatt's first album and I did his last CD. a first-rate "Great Guy"!
I saw Spider John opening for some whipper snappers, Pert Near Sandstone, and the Cedar Cultural Center a few days ago. For those of you not from Minneapolis, this area is in the heart of the west bank; folk central back in the day. Spider's performance was outstanding and his jokes were hilarious. He makes me proud to be a Minneapolitan.
I grew up on the West Bank of Minneapolis, MN, where these guys (along with Willie Murphy who is seen in this video) were musical staples. We could see them any time at the Viking Bar, the Triangle Bar, Ceasar's, Palmers, and the 400 Bar. I love you guys. I hope you're still truckin'.
These 3 guys paved the way for blues revivals. They did it, & almost no one knows it. But those of us around the Twin Cities late 60's were treated to some of the greatest stuff every heard! & it was really some fun too! Nice clips here, and good stories. I was at Dave Ray's last concert in the TC's about 10 days before he died. He played great, with Geoff Muldaur, at the Cedar. Check out the still at 1:34. On the right is Leo Kottke, when he was young & starting things in the Twin Cities too.
