United Nations, New York, 2 June 2009 - Daily Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. António Guterres, says hundreds of thousands of civilians are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance after fleeing Sri Lanka's conflict zone in the last several months.

Some 300, 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are currently being accommodated in 40 emergency shelter sites spread across Vavuniya, Jaffna, and Trincomalee.

UNHCR and partners are carrying out emergency shelter work, regular non-food distributions and protection monitoring.
