"I'm Your Moon," a love song from Charon to Pluto by Jonathan Coulton, performed in sign language. Lyrics and gloss below.

Had to force myself to sign slower on this one, compared to last week's. Also helped that this is one of my all-time favorite JoCo numbers. Enjoy!

They invented a reason
THEY INVENT EXCUSE
Thats why it stings
WHY HURT? THAT
They dont think you matter
THEY THINK YOU NO-MATTER
Because you dont have pretty rings
WHY? YOU NOT HAVE CUTE [RING-around]
I keep telling you I dont care
I TELL++ I DONT-CARE
I keep saying theres one thing they cant change
I SAY++ THEY CANT CHANGE WHAT?

Im your moon
I YOUR MOON
Youre my moon
YOU MY MOON
We go round and round
TWO-OF-US [MOON-handshapes circling]
From out here, its the rest of the world that looks so small
LOOK-[out], ALL SEEM SMALL
Promise me
YOU PROMISE-[me] WHAT?
You will always remember who you are
ALWAYS REMEMBER TOGETHER-[us]

Let them shuffle the numbers
THEY DO MATH
Watch them come and go
THEY LIVE, DIE
Were the ones who are out here
HERE TWO-OF-US ALONE
Out past the edge of what they know
FAR APART-[from them]
We can only be who we are
TWO-OF-US STAY SAME
It doesnt matter if they dont understand
THEY NOT-UNDERSTAND NO-MATTER

[chorus]

Who you were
PAST YOU
Long before
BEFORE
They said you were
THEY DECIDE
No more
YOU NOTHING

Sad excuse for a sunrise
SUNRISE, PFFT
Its so cold out here
HERE COLD
Ice and silence and dark skies
SILENT, DARK
As we go round another year
TWO-OF-US [orbit] YEAR
Let them think what they like, were fine
IGNORE-[them], TWO-OF-US FINE
I will always be right here next to you
ALWAYS TWO-OF-US CLOSE

[chorus]

  • What I really love about your signing is its sense of rhythm and flow. It is especially apparent here through the first chorus and second verse; how your hands move fluidly from one sign to the next in "From out here / It's the rest of the world that looks so small" is really beautiful. This takes song-signing from the embarrassingly stiff and wooden "Sesame St." era to a whole new level.

Thanks for sharing this, and please keep it up!

  • @hanyodossta Thank you so much for noticing! This practice of expressing the rhythm and musicality of a song in physical movements is exactly what I aim for every time. It means a lot to me when someone sees that and appreciates it. :)

  • I'm addicted to your videos! :) Keep it up! !

  • Just to let you know I am in ASL 1 and you have convinced me to further my ASL studies into college.

  • I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.

  • Excellent vid, must say though, I always preferred his acoustic version of this song. Its a wonderful rendition...

  • Jonathan! Finally, someone who sings in sign, instead of signing a song! Thank you!!

  • @oceanhatesyou He's got a lot of suitors.
