The seed of democracy had to planted. As for secularism that you mentioned, I would like to tell you that people will always crave religion when its forbidden. And religion was banned in the two aforementioned countries as a political power making even more intriguing. If a state is restricting its people from knowledge resources, then it's state that is doomed to fail. Till the seed grows into a tree, people will rely on the ideologies they have in hand. In this case it's only religion.

The " tight leash" you are talking about was meant to keep them in power. It does not end there, but their sons were meant to rule after they leave this earth. I would like to remind you that we are talking about republics here. In Libya's case 41 years of suppression, media and school curriculum manipulations made the people in total isolation from the real world. Qadafi and Mubarak thought they are "kings" by accident. However, the sons believe they are rulers by the divine power.

Obviously you have not seen libya under gadafi who ruled for over 41 years. If you watch the video you will hear the Ambassador talking about the civil war in USA. No democracy and no freedom comes without a price. And those who are courageous will always be in the hot zones risking themselves. I believe Ambassador Stevens is a hero and will always admire him.
