  • Why the fuck has the ATV ident got a yellow background?

  • Re-reading what I wrote, I did actually mean VHF, but must have confused myself. Oops.

  • It was VHF that was phased out. We still have UHF transmissions for both analogue and digital channels.

  • thanks

  • The VHF station was Croydon.

One station was all that was required to cover the IBA London region on that band. Croydon was the first station to be opened for the new ITV channel in September 1955.

UHF signals due to their shorter wavelength do not travel so far as VHF and are more easily weakened by hills, tall buildings etc.

So that's the reason you see more UHF stations on the 'Transmitters In Service' slide.

I have a stereo version of this start up track, and I'll do a recreation

  • I can answer that - it's Croydon.

What I don't know is why one VHF transmitter seems to be enough when there are far more UHF ones. Unless they were already beginning to phase UHF out before its ultimate demise in 1985

  • thanks, i'm sure i'll find which transmitter it was

  • I believe it's from 1977.

Can't answer your comment about the transmitter, though.

  • when was this? and i'm suprised to only see 1 VHF transmitter

  • Oops! should have read below first :P
