Episode #4 - Metal Panel Replacement Techniques

In this episode Brad reviews three common techniques for welding replacement steel panels or patches into vehicles. The episode ends with the installation of the patch panel he made in Episode 1.

sixty1ragtop: Make sure you have your welder set up correctly to begin with (.025 wire, shielding gas, polarity set as per welder instructions). You should be on the lowest possible amperage, and your wire speed set accordingly (look at my welding 101 video for instructions on all this). Then concentrate on short bursts, not a bead. If you use this technique you can fill a 1/4" hole or gap if you really want to. doa burst of weld, watch it stop glowing, another burst, etc.

Thanks for putting these videos together, nicely done and pretty thorough. Your information and demonstration gave me the courage to move forwards and purchase a mig set up. I've got a '72 Super that will be getting some sheet metal TLC. The money I save on patching will pay for the welder. One of my tasks is repairing my A pillar, great to see the vid on just that!

Dumb question, have a 61 ragtop I have been teaching myself to weld on. I have tried the butt weld technique with little success, mostly i resort to a lap weld. I find i can cheat the butt weld and butt the two peices right together and produce the desired effect, i know you should leave a gap for better penetration. My question is what is the technique to get the weld to span the gap with out running the wire thru the gap, or blowing holes thru it?
