I thought of all the crazy conspiracy theories I've heard over the years, and I am glad someone else sees what I saw- people finding random facts and stringing them together, because that's what our brains do.

I'm working my way through the book and think it's a brilliant introduction to all the topics in it, which this is just one. The podcast is also excellent with additions material to cause your head to spin. And a very cool video to get attentions also.

Oswald didn't even shoot Kennedy... but otherwise cool video. I think that if there was hypothetically magical about big coincidences like the JFK and Lincoln thing, people would still argue that "Oh, it's just our tendency to want to see coincidences and patterns".

Since pattern-seeking was essential to our survival in the days when we were potential lion food, we are genetically selected to see patterns- (was that just the wind rustling the grass or is it a carnivore??)The successful primate differentiates between real patterns that are meaningful, and those that seem connected but are simply cherry-picked from among other random occurrences as the result of our confirmation bias. The book makes this clear. Save a buck, get it at the library.

    He sounds like Eeyore.

I disagree that it's not smart to create patterns when none are technically there. We use this pattern-making skill to ask the what-if questions that lead to great literature. We make quilts, we put together the puzzle that is the periodic table of the elements. We look at cause-and-effect all the time; sometimes we make mistakes in our assessmenht. But the fact that we can do it at all, and correct course given better information, is wonderful.

"You know, the most amazing thing happened to me tonight. I was coming here, on the way to the lecture, and I came in through the parking lot. And you won't believe what happened. I saw a car with the license plate ARW 357. Can you imagine? Of all the millions of license plates in the state, what was the chance that I would see that particular one tonight? Amazing!" -Richard Feynmann
