tip: this song starts in the key of C in the beginning, not D, it then switches to the key of D, try it out your doing good

Great job bud on guitar and vocals - just a little nitpick, but don't hit the high E string that loud when strumming back up, especially before the third verse chord change portion - it's a deep, poignant song so don't strum the high strings too evasively until you reach the chord change to the up tempo part - it will change the mood and the emotional aspect of the song
