The main problem with the Sherman tank was Gen. Leslie MacNair. He not only endorsed a doctrine of tank destroyers but blocked efforts to upgun and up armor the Sherman. He also refused to ship Pershings over. This could be justified during the early days of the invasion when there were not facilities to unload heavy tanks. The Sherman is one of the great tanks and its later history showed that it could be upgunned and reengined
Actually Caterpillar built some diesel engines to replace the underpowered engines installed in American tanks including the sherman. It was air cooled and produced so much power it would break the drivetrain pretty much at will. The other thing was the Army ran on gasoline in those days so diesel powered equipment other then engineer equipment just wasn't in use. Things happened very fast from 1942-44 and had things lasted, better tanks would have arrived.

This is true, but diesel has a much higher flashpoint and so is less flammable. It doesnt matter now though.
