I just happened to purchase the book that told the story about Laika/Kudryavka 2 weeks ago, read it,, and touched, very touched. Later I found this and.. "Japanese people sure are crazy (in positive way) because they can make song out of many unique unpopular worldwide hidden stories and make it, SPECIAL" <---first though :)

It's not the death of the dog thats sad, though it also plays a part, it's the idea of leaving your family expecting to come home and see their smiles only to realize, at least we do as viewers, you won't be coming home and you won't see you family again. That's what made me cry.

Laika, a stray dog, originally named Kudryavka (Russian: Кудрявка Little Curly), underwent training with two other dogs, and was eventually chosen as the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957.
Laika likely died within hours after launch from overheating, possibly caused by a failure of the central R-7 sustainer to separate from the payload
