SmartPlugs are not Dr. Bird's invention, but as a great inventor, he reckonized the historic and scientific merit of the SmartPlug technology and agreed to fly his J-3 Cub with floats and an O-200 engine using no magnetos and no spark plugs.

This is the first flight of a SmartPlug powered aircraft and Dr. Bird is the first pilot to fly a carbureted, gasoline burning engine with SmartPlugs as the only ignition source.
