Time Out Productions presents the first of two interviews with New York City based guitarist Kevin R. Gallagher.
Both shows recorded in the fall of 2001.
New York based classical guitarist and pedagogue Kevin R. Gallagher began playing rock guitar in his formative years but his musical appetite quickly led him to study jazz and ultimately, classical guitar. His renowned gift for the classical guitar won him numerous scholarships and awards while studying with Benjamin Verdery at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and at the Julliard School under the tutelage of Sharon Isbin.
As one of the world's leading classical guitarists, he was the first-prize winner in the 1993 Guitar Foundation of America, the 1994 American String Teachers Association, and the 1993 Artists International Competition. Most notably, Mr. Gallagher also earned the distinct honor of being the only American classical guitarist ever to win first prize in the prestigious Francisco Tárrega Guitar Competition in Spain (1997).
Following his studies at Julliard, Mr. Gallagher gave many classical guitar performances and masterclasses throughout the world, including those in Spain, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, and England. He has recorded four classical guitar CDs. His recording for Naxos Records Guitar Recital- Music from the Renaissance and Baroque was hailed as "...one of the very best NAXOS guitar recordings" by Classical Guitar Magazine (London) in 2000.
Kevin is also the leader and founder of the chamber rock quartet, Electric Kompany.

agreed, Kevin's technique is flawless, and his neurological thing is going away, so hopefully he will be on top where he belongs very soon...

First of all; he didn't play electric guitar to get his grades at Julliard.
Second; what the fuck do you know—Connors knew what he was talking about and you don't? I didn't "know" Connors I studied with him.
Third; Kevin's electric playing is nothing special.
Asshole.

Nice that you knew Bill Connors. But it takes a certain amount of testicular fortitude to correct Kevin's technique. It's a good thing when you give advice to amateurs who are struggling to play well. It's a bit pathological when you give advice to people who were the best in their class at Juilliard.

I took some lessons with Kevin a couple of years ago. I stopped only because I left NYC. He's had a bit of trouble with tendinitis, I guess, but watching him up close was amazing. He has a left hand like a sewing machine (a very musical one ;)). Strong technique, strong sense of music, Kevin is less well known than he should be.
The sad thing about classical guitar is that there's only room for a few at the top of the food chain- Kevin is as good, I think, as the people perched there now.

I have Kevin's Cd with Dowland and Purcell; fantastic.
Odd that he studied with Benjamin Verdery...can't stand his playing at all. Isbin is great.
The interviewer is "just discovering" Hendrix? What rock has he been living under? And he sure mangled the pronounctiation of Tárrega.
I don't like the electric Bach here but applaud Kevin's explorations. RH technique could be improved a lot by using more forearm and turning hand to pick like you open a door with a key. Bill Connors taught me that.
