http://www.bc.edu/socialwork - As a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Boston College Graduate School of Social Work student Ashley Hammonds, MSW '11, takes pride in her culture and in helping to create awareness about the lives of modern day Native Americans.
Ashley is currently doing her field placement at the Franciscan Hospital for Children—The Children's Wellness Initiative. Her internship involves school based counseling to children in the Boston Public Schools.
Ashley is one of eight recipients selected for the 2010-2011 Consuelo W. Gosnell Scholarships from the National Association of Social Workers Foundation. The Gosnell Scholarships are awarded to master's degree candidates in social work who are interested in working with American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino populations, or in public and voluntary nonprofit agency settings.
After graduation Ashley plans to move to Tucson, Arizona, to serve as a family and child clinician among the Native American population in the area through Indian Health Service. Her ultimate goal will be to return to her hometown of Robeson County to work as a clinician with youth of her tribe.
