On August 27, Washington D.C.-based singer/songwriter KUKU, BBE recording artist Siji, and singer/songwriter and guitarist Sparla Swa will take the stage at one of DC's best venues for live music within the U Street corridor, DC9 Nightclub.
On this night, three multilingual Yoruba musicians will bridge the gap between their West African culture and their adopted American culture. They will share original songs and stories from their respective music projects to an audience that will range in age from 21 to 60, the majority being 1st and 2nd generation from the continent, as experienced in the artists' many live performances in various venues around the US and abroad. A DJ will play West African-inspired rhythms of soukous, afrobeat, reggae and soul.
This is the fourth installment of a series that started at New York City's S.O.B.'s. This event continues to build a loyal fan base as the emerging pan-African movement of 2nd generation and African Americans are becoming increasingly politically astute and unified. By bringing together music and culture, professionals and a rapidly growing independent music scene, Yoruba Acoustic Soul provides for a wonderful experience for patrons and musicians. This event will continue at larger venues in the future with additional performers. All three performers currently have a fan base inside the D.C. metropolitan area, as well as the east coast.
