Don Rich From Nature's Touch Taxidermy shares the ins and outs of creating an authentic 1700's European Skull Mount of a whitetail deer. According to Don there are 3 methods commonly used for creating the classic skull mount. The beetle method is great if you have the beetles and plan to do a bunch of skull mounting, the full head boil complete with teeth and the lower half of the head (Much more labor intensive and harder to do) and the 1700's method were the bottom half of the skull is removed. The whole skull mount process only takes 3-4 hours and the total cost is under $5 for a quality mount that would look good in any den or hunting cabin. If you like to hunt deer and want a cheap alternative to a full mount check out the complete video at www.taxidermytube.com. Note, this YouTube.com Clip is only a 2 minute preview of the complete video available at Taxidermy Tube.
I'm going to do this for my next whitetail mount. I just can't afford to do a full mount these days.
