Variax isn't a synth. Neither a MIDI instrument. It's a guitar. All the processing to emulate the other guitar sounds are done with what is captured by the pickups and it's then changed (by severe eq'ing and filtering, whatever) to make what is coming out of the output jack to sound like the modeled/emulated guitar. Pretty much like your fav distortion pedal does when emulating a "tube" amp.
