The University of Washington Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences is an interdisciplinary center conducting innovative research on lifelong learning and the brain. The centers scientific studies on children and adults have had a far-reaching impact on cognitive science, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and education.
One area of research focuses on how infant and adult brains process language, and has advanced our understanding of critical periods in learning. Another important area of research focuses on cognitive development and social understanding in infants, children, and adults. This pioneering work has demonstrated the importance of role models in human development and their profound effect on learning. Video courtesy UWTV.
This is a video that I find supports the research that sooner is better than later to introduce new languages for infants. There is no other period of time than the 6-12 month gap that children could understand any language in the world like this. And if not exposed to those languages during this time, it will be a long time before they can learn to distinguish between them, if at all.
