I have to admit I enjoy hearing Rod singing these songs, and love the early Deep Purple sound. There's no doubt about it (as suggested in this video), Rod Evans was the original vocalist for Deep Purple, and they had a fair amount of success in the states during that time, It was a stupid thing to do though, if anything he should have avoided what the management were telling him and toured with a name that said "The original vocalist of Deep Purple performing the music of Deep Purple".
@kurtisthall65 There is a major difference in that Tony Iommi was a continuous presence in Black Sabbath, whereas Rod Evans was a member of Deep Purple for about two years before being replaced by Ian Gillan. The law's the law, but it's obvious Iommi had more of a leg to stand on than Evans' did. Also, Blackmore had been out of the band before they broke up so if any of the band members owned the name it would have been Paice and Lord at that time.

No wonder DP sacked him in '69...Rod Evans can't sing and never could!

cringeworthy

Smoke on the Water without a guitar solo. Even a cover band would play the proper guitar solo.

Sad and pathetic end for Rod Evans. Better he'd been caught shoplifting than done this and got sued for it.

Smoke on the Water was written 3 years after Evans left so he certainly had no input on that song!
