There are plenty of good things that can happen when a young person takes up ham radio as opposed to CB radio. Not saying it is bad but in some places it is real bad. My home town for example, it is not a place to be on at that young of an age. However, ham radio because of the licensing requirement does not have the foul language and thug like activities. Now, ham radio is not free of it's share of bad apples but it is considerably safer. And yes there was a 5 year old that passed cw (more)

and is the youngest ham in the nation but this young lady may grow up to be an emergency worker. She could help with communications when the normal system is down because of a storm. There is much that this young lady can do. I commend her for passing her tests and hope to hear you on the air some day.
It is a big achievement to pass especially when she became an Extra. There is some difficult math in the test. It took me 5 times and I passed 1 year to the day I got my Tech. Good job.

Man that's awesome a young girl is into ham radio. My little girl likes to sit with me when I'm on the radio. Maybe one day she too will become a ham.

She's too cute to be a ham! she needs to gain like 600 lbs, stink like cigarettes, dress really bad, be really cheap, get rid of your teeth! ah yeah you have to be anti - social ! don't talk about anything in life except for stupid radio and antennas.

It's a shame some people feel the need to devalue this young lady's achievement. I bet she studied hard, you aren't born with technical knowledge. I seem to recall a child of 5 passed the morse exam many years ago, that doesn't mean the morse test was too easy, it means the child achieved something a lot of adults claimed to unable to do. Amateur radio is supposed to be fun, you just need to learn enough about radio to operate safely to start out. She did it, and well done to her.

@JockoFlocko I have to take issue with your CW bashing though, it's a great mode. All the modes we use could be said to be outdated, AM is about a century old, SSB's been around since the 1930s. A lot of young 'uns enjoy morse too, it'll be used as long as there's amateur radio.
