Paul sings "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" by Al Kooper, and performed by Blood, Sweat and Tears ("Child Is Father to the Man," 1971). It was recorded in December 1967 and released in early 1968.
Paul first did this during Act 5 of "Late Show with David Letterman" on Friday June 7, 2002 and repeated the bit every Friday until June 11, 2004. Dave brought out the cape the first two weeks. The full list of guests to share this honor are listed at DDY's Late Show Fan Page: http://www.ddy.com/dl17.html
On June 11, 2004, Dave announces that this is the second anniversary of the Cape Thing, and it's been done 65 times,* with television stars, sports heroes, musicians, politicians, and -- when they couldn't get anybody famous -- members of the staff. In honor of the anniversary, Paul Anka (who wrote "My Way" for Frank Sinatra) does a reworked version of the song, calling for an end to the bit.
* Actually, it was 68 times.

the band-all buddy's of Al Kooper-do a fantastic job instrumentally!!! Al wrote the original song with Otis Redding in mind as well as James Brown if you read his "Back Stage Passes" bio-so the 'JB cape' theater is an inside joke. Perfect!
