I am not sure about the fuel, but I have noticed that this old Russky design works well. I respect Russian engineering---Their students tend to be very good at math & physics, and it shows here.

No offense, but your statement is not correct. The Soyuz engines burn kerosene & liquid oxygen (LOX). Source: Russian RIA Novosti & many other sites.
Russia does use solid fuel for the TOPOL-M ICBM rocket, which is one of the most capable ICBMs in the world, probably as good as the latest US Minuteman III series. The Soyuz series has completed many more launches than any other system in the world.
