Nice and Games -- Beef Drop [Atari 8bit]

It's time for burgers with Beef Drop! This is a very well made port of the classic 1982 arcade release Burgertime, from Data East. The title and character names have been changed for this port, but the action is pretty authentic. As near as I can tell, it includes all the boards from the arcade, and even has the demo screen.

In Beef Drop you control Chef Pete, who is trying to put together giant hamburgers, while being harassed by Frank the hot dog, Mr. Yolk the egg, and Dr. Dill the pickle. A more criminal bunch of food the world has never known. But armed with pepper, Chef Pete will remain cool as a cucumber as you guide him over the platforms and up and down the ladders.

Beef Drop has 5 difficulty levels to allow most everyone to have a fun experience. The footage in this video was played at the "hard" setting, which is one below the "expert" setting, which is the most difficult. The hard setting plays at a speed I like, without having quite as many enemies from the start as the "expert" setting.

There's not too much bad to say about this game, except that the music is a little off. As you play the game, you'll notice that the bass line will get shifted over relative to the melody, which causes the music to be a little weird sounding. The music that plays when you clear a board is a little off as well. But these to me aren't a big deal, just a little curious. :)

If you ever want to know what it's like to be chased by food, and don't want to go antagonize some cows, Beef Drop is a much safer and nicer way to do it. Please don't harass cows. If you really want to upset some food, go insult some corn stalks or something.

Nice, I used to play the NES Burgertime a bit with my freinds and we would always crack up over how absurd but fun the game was.

Just a note about how sometimes your enemies seem to turn dim and transparent. That's when they would be flickering on a real TV, but after deinterlacing the footage, it starts to look...different. When I originally uploaded this video, the bad guys would just disappear completely, then pop back in. I finally found a setting though, that just makes them fade out a bit, but still visible. I figured that was the best option I had, especially cause I don't really know what I'm doing. :)
