I think that through workplaces, schools, and church groups you can help them get back on their feet after such a loss.

Try to get a local organization, like a fire department or a church involved. Tell them what happened and see if they will help to organize some sort of dinner plate fundraiser. Our local FD and churches do this all the time to help members and others in the community. They will advertise and then make some sort of dinner plates, ie. spaghetti and sell it and give the proceeds to those in need. I live in the south so we do a lot of fried chicken and bbq.
