UN Human Rights Council
"Urgent Debate on the Raid on the Flotilla"
These are highlights from the UN Human Rights Council debate held yesterday and today, followed by UN Watch's response.
UN rights chief Navi Pillay opened the debate by saying she was "shocked" that "humanitarian aid would be met with such violence," and "unequivocally condemned" Israel's "unnecessary use of force."
The Palestinian representative accused Israel of "believing it is above the law." Turkey decried Israel's "great breach of international law." Egypt for the Non-Aligned Movement said that the incident was "another example of Israel's total avoidance of international law and disregard for international norms."
Austria, Iceland, Panama and El Salvador urged an investigation. However, Canada urged all states "not to rush to conclusions before all facts are known." Canada expressed concern for the condition of people living in Gaza but "can strongly understand Israel's concerns about terrorism from Gaza that threatens their national security."
Spain for the EU expressed "deepest concerns about the events." Pakistan for the Islamic Group protested the "unprovoked outrageous attack on the ships carrying humanitarian aid... Israel should no longer be allowed to release a reign of terror on Palestinians." Israel's "heinous crime" was "a brutal reminder of its continued total disregard for human rights and humanitarian law."
The USA was "deeply disturbed" by the recent violence and "regrets the tragic loss of life and injuries." The Obama Administration "strongly urged the Israeli government to investigate the incident fully." The USA remains "deeply concerned by the suffering of civilians in Gaza." At the same time, Hamas' arms smuggling and commitment to terrorism "undermines security and prosperity for Palestinians and Israelis alike."
Sudan for the Arab Group stated that "this Israeli attack against the freedom flotilla is a violation of both maritime law and human rights law."
Cuba slammed "the international powers that provide Israel with a cloak to protect and shield," saying they "must answer to history."
China called the events "shocking." Yemen condemned Israel's actions for showing "all forms of international terrorism and piracy." Lebanon called Israel's actions one more addition to "Israel's long list of Israeli terror."
Bahrain: ''unjustified terrorist attack''? As if there were ''justified'' terrorist attacks... So now we are in december 2011 and note that rectifications on that matter never come on our main medias.

@glyderau ... because they don't want to see it! Our media and governments are wrapped up in an ideology of appeasement and they turn their backs to their best friends while encouraging islamists destroying secular powers in the Middle East. The price Europe is going to pay is high, hope they will wake up soon, before it's too late

At first, I was shocked.. how could Isreal do this? How could they let it happen to innocent aid-givers? Then i saw the steel bars, knives, etc. and it became clear that these soldiers were fighting for their lives! If they'd wanted to destroy the flotilla, they wouldn't have bothered landing on it. Those soldiers were attacked first. Why can't the press see that? It's obvious to the most unbiased eye!!

We all know that the UN is compromised and as much use as a chocolate kettle, they have turned a blind eye to hezbollah on the Israel/Lebanon border for years.

@Soloman1001 so true mate, what's this all about? 9 people killed on a boat? the cargo was delivered in gaza after all! FUCKING rediculous.

It's rediculous they only look at Israel while in Africa, EVERY SINGLE DAY, thousands op people die for things like diamonds and emeralds. It costs too much to move a village and so they just murder everybody to start digging for valuable materials. How about the massacre of christians in india, korea, china, the south american regimes, drugwars, starvation, THOUSANDS of people die every day, but what the UN is discussing is 9 people killed on a boat, completely their own fault? HYPOCRITS.

@DreamFreedom1
well, you just have to look at the genocide in Sudan at the hands of an Islamic dictator, 500,000 civilians slaughtered and 3 million displaced, Where is the UN? Where are the Protests? That is the most damning evidence of World Bias on the Planet and tells us all we need to know. Dont trust these muslims. TAQIYAA!

Yet, German chancellor Merkel is too cowardish to even condemn Erdogans bombings of the kurds, his killing of Christians, planned deporting of 100,000 Armenians or illegal occupations. Yeah right it's so much easier to blame and critisize little Israel. Yet, that is going to increase the impression that European media and European politicians are stupid and weak. And this again is going to increase the aggressivity of the muslim world.
