Understand the importance of Hula. Once forced underground, the dance is now celebrated as an intrinsic part of Hawaiian culture.

  • What's wrong with you people? How can you write such awful stuff on a page dedicated to a beautiful dance from a nearly destroyed culture. Have some respect for others and yourselves!

  • @funkedafied143 I know, right? I hate how people think they can just move somewhere for a year and claim to be a native. They don't bother learning a lot about the customs, or just come knowing very little about it. Or those morons that only want to learn the curse words. Maybe they should try to actually learn the language and avoid looking like a fool. The best thing about people that are actually from the islands is that we carry an authenticity about who we are as a people, and our culture.

  • Great piece on Hula, originally produced in the mid-1980's--folks like Aunty Kaui Zuttermeister, Darrell Lupenui and Frank Palani Kahala who are no longer on this earth are in this video.

However, thumbs way down for the unacceptable pronunciation and spelling of many of the Hawaiian words and names....National Geographic, what?

  • @Gille87 well modern ppl will always try to compare things, but i agree that we cant generally compare to them.

Many civilizations used to live naked in antiquity even those among the most sophisticated like Greeks.

  • @rurounisld U can't compare what they were w what u are used to from ur culture and how we live today, in the past it was just clothes, not a thong, not a boxer, nothing just clothing, and before the white came, they didn't wear anything, except when having a ceremony!

  • @hawaiianstylin And in ancient Hawai'i there were no such thing as gay phobia, or typical sex at all, men women and what ever u were or liked was accepted!

  • @thestraniero Amen! People are just ridiculous in their prejudicial comments sometimes.

  • I've recently started taking hula auana dance classes and I love it! I'd do Hula Kahiko (traditional hula) if I were younger and had better knees. Hula is a beautiful expression of Hawaiian/Pacific Island culture, and should be regarded just as seriously and legitimately as any other cultural dance form IMO. Thanks Natl Geo for doing that!

  • I used to hula :) I miss it so much

  • Hula competition are no joke ! The person who calls them ”gay guys” don’t have a clue on the Hawaiian culture, or any culture. I’m sure most of the guys didn’t want to wear the Warrior clothing, But the Pride of the Hawaiian Culture was the key . “Hawaiian Pride”.Just closed minded people that has no Cultural Pride will put down everything.Hawaiian/American Pride-Standing when the American Flag is raised or National Anthem is played. some say gay, I say Pride...Gay is a culture all it's self .

  • great stuff! i laugh @ all of the hateful comments and so should you!

  • Mamma mia! che meravigliosa danza!
