Its called methyl ethyl chloride. Not oil. Your body heat will boil it as well. I worked for the Antique Apparatus company building 6 a day...I know.

Actually it’s a special chemical called methyl ethyl chloride that has a very low boiling point and condenses very quickly. This allows the liquid to boil inside the tube without blowing it up. The bubbles condense back to liquid as soon as they get to the top of the tube. The cool thing is this chemical actually boils bellow body temperature so you can hold one of these tubes in your hand and watch as your body heat boils the liquid.
It's not a jukebox without bubble tubes.
