The Sherman Minton Bridge, which carries I-64 between Louisville with southern Indiana, is currently the Number one transportation issue in the Midwest. The 50-year-old bridge was ordered closed September Ninth after a crack was discovered in a weld in a critical spot. Since then, engineers, law enforcement and government leaders have been working to get the bridge reopened and to manage new traffic patterns during the closure. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear recently addressed public concerns. Governor Beshear stated that a total inspection of the bridge is expected to be completed in early October. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the Sherman Minton bridge "would be fixed in a timely way so that people can start using it again."
