Ugly shadow glitch in the otherwise amazing and beautiful Skyrim for PC (Radeon 5870, Catalyst 11.10). Seems to be related to shadows cast during the movement of the sun through the sky during daylight hours.

  • I fixed this by adding:

    fSunShadowUpdateTime=0

    fSunUpdateThreshold=2.0

    fShadowBiasScale=0.6

    to the [Display] category of

    \Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini

    (note: it didn't work when I modified SkyrimPrefs.ini, only Skyrim.ini)

  • How to solve annoying flicker on walls and such in this video:

    1. Go to \Documents\My Games\Skyrim and open SkyrimPrefs.ini

    2. Find the line "fShadowBiasScale"

    3. Replace the current value of "fShadowBiasScale" with "1.0000" so it says fShadowBiasScale=1.0000

    4. Save changes made to the .ini.

    5. Start the game through Skyrim.exe in your Skyrim directory (make a shortcut to it to the desktop), DON'T start it through Steam (that will revert the changes back to what it was before).

    6. Enjoy.

  • @thisnameisuniq you so much!!!

  • @hlvrn you could make the SkyrimPrefs.ini read-only.

  • This same glitch happens in my breezehome house on the walls and objects around the fire. This fix doesn;t seem to do anything

  • @hlvrn changes nothing!

  • also put the shadows on high it helps

  • bDynamicWindowReflections=1

    bUseSunbeams=1

    bShadowsOnGrass=1

    bActorSelfShadowing=1

    where do you add these? they don't seem to be working

  • It happens at night too. Finally found the fix for this, thanks to these comments. Nice.

  • i have a glitch where there is a purple aura around my character and it doesn't go away!!! Please help!!!

  • Best compromise of settings :

    fSunShadowUpdateTime=0.05

    fSunUpdateThreshold=0.5

    Try that, you can actually still see it on the wall, but it does not look glitchy, and the regular shadow updates make the game more enjoyable than update every 2 min.
