  • orionsgolfer; Clean up your reply and I'll let it stay. An airplane and boat take about a hundred swordfish in 4 months. A longliner takes about 200 a month and you whine about airplanes?

  • you guys cant be very good then because they get alot more in nova scotia than 100 fish..its more like 100 in 3 weeks

  • We are in California, USA

  • get rid of the stupid planes and there will be more fish around

  • It is the mentality of nitwits like you that caused the demise of the swordfish stocks. Harpooning and airplanes are local fishing. The gov outlawed airplanes and pushed the fisherman to driftnets and longlines and now the stocks are wiped out from fishing 24/7. In bad weather or good they can follow the fish anywhere.

  • they didnt save any buffalo for us did they?

    "Commercial fishing,Not a Crime"

  • it is better than long lining. but our grand kids wont be doing it. money will end up regulating our oceans. when most of the fish are gone we will be not too far behind .dead ocean means dead planet.

  • As of March 2007, there are over 1300 vessels fishing with drift nets in European Waters.

Drift netting in International Waters was banned in 1992.

  • Drifnets were banned everywhere many years ago.

  • Then don't target a pelagic which cannot sustain the biomass under the commercial pressure. There are plenty of other species to pursue albeit maybe not at the price you want. Let them recover and allow the stick boats to SELECTIVELY target swords. NO WASTE...NO BYCATCH. A win win for both the commercial stick boats and recreational fishermen.Longlines and driftnets are pathetically destructive to all species and pelagics and their usage for swords is only supported by them and their lobbyists.

  • There's a little problem with buying out:

    - I (AND THE VAST MAJORITY OF US) DON'T WANT TO BE BOUGHT OUT, I WANT TO REMAIN AND LIVE AS A FISHERMAN.

  • I support stick boats as the commercial solution once sword stocks are again stable. I am in favor of banning completely the longliners and driftnets in intl't waters, the destructive power and bycatch is just too massive. I think these operators should be bought out, even the sportfishers have a plan to do just that. They can then find whatever job they want...

  • Kid, you're talking about communitY (hotel, food, gas, marinas).

What about fishermen communities and their heritage and culture?

Oops, I forgot: they could go to find a job that "provide a real economic support to the global community" for example Lehman Brothers....

  • Because the commercials take the vast majority of the catch and longliners kill thousands of juvenilles in wasted bycatch. If a sporty is lucky enough to land one swordfish, the fish must comply with size regulations. In addition, the sporties provide more economic support to the community. Hotels, food, gas, marinas. Hundreds of millions/year with minimal impact on the resource as an overall % catch. Places like Venice, LA and Cabo MX wouldn't exist if it weren't for the sportfishing industry.
