Our "Tisha" vs. The Ski Stick-Famous Face Off, Ukraine 2007

This fascinating vid is from a real-life face off (russ.: "strelka"), when Alex publicly challenged a notorious Ukranian guard and protection dog school, where dogs are taught to re-grip during protection training, which by their assertion, makes for a more efficient fighter. That made for a dispute - dogs taught to grip (a standard practice in Europe and the US) vs. those taught to re-grip "the Ukranian protection dog" way - which training makes for a more efficient dog during a serious confrontation with a man? No scenarios were known (it was agreed only not to break dogs to the point of physical injury). The goal of a decoy in this scenario was to try to prevent dog from biting. The decoy is holding an aluminum ski-stick in his hand, and you can see in slow-motion him hitting the dog. This is a HARD test to pass.Tisha (belgian ring-style grip training) aced this scenario. This meeting showed the flaw central to the re-gripping method practiced in the Ukraine, in situations involving personal protection duty, dogs who were not taught to go for a solid grip showed much less confidence and ability to get hold of and maintain grip on an assailant to prevent him from getting to the owner. All dogs that passed (didn't let the "bad guy" get to the owner) showed ability to hold on to the grip... Ironically among those who passed, even those who were taught to re-grip, showed a determined and lasting grip :) Strangely, I have never seen this type of a scenario performed during any official Ukranian guard and protection dog competitions or tests.
