Anthony Newley in CRANKS (1956) with Annie Ross and Gilbert Vernon

A couple of firsts — his first appearance on the Sullivan show, and his first Broadway appearance. CRANKS, despite running for 220+ performances in London, didn't fare too well in the US, and closed after 40 performances. Here are three numbers from the show.

From a "Newley fan" point of view, this is an interesting piece." The "Newley" singing style was beginning to take shape, and the "miming" hands" were to become another specific item in his stage performances .
