Stand there buddy and swing this axe. Alright! Now I am going to stand in front of you and swing my axe too! LOL. Seriously, we had to do this a few times as kids on the farm, we braced the log, stood on the top back to back and used long bent handled axes to hew the sides. Much safer, (i mean seriously much safer) and the long handles gave us more power on the swing. Just sayin....

Based on Random House, you are using the term correctly, but I am inclined to agree that in the context of log building this isn't properly "hewing", in that it is not the conversion of a log to square timbers. I would classify this as applying a surface treatment using traditional hewing techniques, so it would not be incorrect to say that these have been hand hewn, though perhaps misleading. It's all semantics really. If the client is happy that's all that matters, eh?

this looks un safe:P

and if you wanna learn from someone (if you REALLY want to :-), look at the germans hewing or find something from scandinavia.....

Holy smoke! Sorry guys, but this is NOT HEWING!!!! You should at least know what does it REALLY mean.....

Dear Hand-Faked It: Sorry I hurt your feelings. I just am tired of those who scratch up a log-face and try to call it hewn.

wow how far we have gotten with today's technology!

This is nice, but... I hew logs every day. This is a weak version of real hewing. You have sawn logs and you are cutting away some wood to give it the "appearence" of being hewn. These men have skill and talent, but this is not how great-grammpa did it.
Chessbruno, I checked out your profile. Looks like your hobby is surfing youtube and busting on everyone elses videos. I notice you do not have any videos uploaded on the "right" way to hew a log. Please educate us on the proper way to hew like "Great-Grammpa", so we can all be like you.

Ventrek, hewing logs is a skill which few have mastered. What appears to be carless "cutting" to you is seen as an art by those who can appreciate it. No, you shouldn't allow your kids to pick up axes and swing toward each other, but once you have mastered the art of hand-hewing by broadaxe...........the techniques depicted in the video are as safe as any other aspect of log home construction.
