Benedict XVI met with leaders of one of Italys largest confederation of labor unions and expressed the Churchs appreciation for the fundamental role they play in society.
He called on workers and businesses to come together for a solution to the current economic crisis.

The great challenge and opportunity that the alarming current economic crisis calls for taking on is to find a new synthesis between the common good and the market, between capital and labor. In this context, the potential contribution of labor unions is significant.
The Pope also reminded the syndicate, which draws heavily on Christian beliefs, that the Church is willing and ready to help when it comes to tackling the social and economic problems of these turbulent times.

The Church, an expert on humanity, is tireless in offering the contribution of its teaching and experience to those who wish to serve the cause of man, of work and progress, of social justice and peace.
The audience coincided with celebrations of the confederations 60th anniversary. Benedict XVI praised them for drawing inspiration from some of the Churchs social teachings in their efforts to protect the rights of workers and pensioners.
The trades unions will be one of the agencies that will bring upon this earth a time of trouble such as has not been since the world began.
