We track in and then around what appears to be Man Ray's classic surrealist image featuring his muse Kiki. Beautiful shapes and silhouettes - including an ancient Greek
gymnopédiste - dance serenely in the background. For just a moment before
metamorphosis, our violoncelle comes to life to sing us a poem set to Satie's haunting
Gymnopédie No.1. " Le Violoncelle" is a single-shot micro-voyage into the creative milieux
of Man Ray, Erik Satie & Kiki de Montparnasse, and from the beginnings of photographic
manipulation to the present era of digital duplicity.

  • I didn´t understend, where the video comes from? It's "amazingly" beautifull, please let me know where can I find the rest

  • Thanks for the comments! It's part of a 4-minute short film on 35mm we made for the Young Filmmakers' Fund in Sydney, Australia, in 2004.

When I saw Man Ray's image, Le Violon d'Ingres one day, I immediately heard Satie's music in my head. On further research I realised they'd probably known eachother in Paris, but what about Kiki (Man Ray's model)? What if this still image came to life?

At the moment, the film has been on SBS TV in Australia and in festivals around the world.

  • Eventually I would like to distribute it via iTunes or similar - but currently it's still difficult for independent filmmakers to do this.... but stay tuned!

    Adam.

  • Oh! It's so good! Why dont you upload all the film on youtube? it's really beautiful

  • It's very kind of you to say so!

But have you read YouTube's terms of use? This is why I don't put the whole thing up! :-0
