He didn't mean to crack that branch. He looks pretty embarrassed.

The crack is intentional. This was done to eliminate the bow where the branch meets the trunk. Most of us would cut a small notch on the branch to be on the safe side, but Kimura's at the point where he can do it without cutting a notch. The crack will result in a much more natural look that a notch would.
