@SpazChat Very dynamic voice. Vocal chops closer to Dionne Warwick (actually closer to Cissy/Whitney Houston) not quite the flavor of the day. Too refined for one group, too Blues/Gospel inflected for the other.
She put out a mostly CD probably 15 yrs ago which i pull out every so often where she sings, "Here's To Life." It's my fave of that song. I also saw her in the musical, "Blues In The Night." She was a revelation. So much more than "Band of Gold," singer. (I like that song, btw)

@chocolatetopping , I think it's because her voice didn't sound as dynamic and she wasn't promoted as well. I always wondered why they chose her sister instead of her to be in Post Diana Supremes.

This song caught me off guard. This is gorgeous and so mellow. This is a classic, soulful, easy-listening tune.

@kenesto Why do I Love Ms Paynes music so much.
I didn't know that She Sings this kind of Music!
Still, to this day, 2011, Her Voice remains Beautiful as She does.

It's amazing when you hear a voice like this that is so on point...that her career wasn't as BIG as Diana's or even Dionne's. Freda is my opinion is one of the classiest unsung heroins of our lifetime. Not only is she beautiful and talented, her voice still sounds great today. TV One should definitely add her to their 2010 line-up on "Unsung". I'm so interested in learning about her career, loves, desires and triumphs in her life. I'm sure it's a story to be told! Much love to Scherrie too!
Lovely classic soul tune !
Great post !

I've never known Freda to sport a wig in her 67(today's her birthday)years that I'm aware. Her very own look and assets have captured the world enough...trust me!By the way, this is an old-school hair style that was called The Big-hair look, famed by celebrities back in the 1980's entertainment era.

I found this album in one of those sales and bought it in 1973. I read she was a jazz singer before she became a pop/soul singer. I haven't heard this album in years but she sounds good because Freda is just a fantastic singer. I saw her for the first time LIVE in 1999 and my goodness, her voice is big LIVE. The recordings have her tamed but LIVE she is wonderful and SEXY as hell.

Your data is so correct hombre!Jazz started it all for Freda Payne with idols such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, who inspired her growing interest in music. She initially worked with Jazz artists Duke Ellington,Lionel Hampton and Pearl Bailey and others, being coached and sharing the stage with the legendary musicians. Her first album:"After The Lights Go Down Low And Much More",was recorded the day she turned 21 and was a Jazz sensation.I saw her live too! She's gorgeous and talented!!!
