In this video, I'm driving along Mansell Road, North Point Parkway, Haynes Bridge Road and North Point Drive in Alpharetta, Georgia. I also enter the North Point Mall grounds, driving along North Point Circle and North Point Center East.

I like driving around North Fulton County. It's a very nice place, so is South Fulton, where I'm from. Fulton County is an oddly-shaped county, 70 miles nose to tail.

There have been talks, by state legislators and resident of North Fulton County, to recreate Milton County, which merged with Fulton County, along with Campbell County, in 1932, to save money. The reason for this is that many North Fulton residents dislike that a lot of their tax monies aren't used to benefit them. If Milton County were recreated, it would be comprised of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell, Sandy Springs and, recently, northern Atlanta (Buckhead). Roswell was originally apart of Cobb County, ceding from Cobb (in 1932) to make Fulton County a contiguous entity. Also, Sandy Springs was originally known as Hammond, and is where Hammond Drive got its name.

There are two ways that Milton County could be recreated -- 1) The Georgia State Constitution would have to be amended. Currently, Georgia can have no more that 159 counties, which, in my opinion, is too many to begin with. 2) Some counties would have to merge, taking the maximum number of counties under 159. There are a lot of counties in South Georgia that don't have a lot in terms of county government, but that's neither here nor there.

If either of these two scenarios were to happen, Milton County would be the richest county in Georgia and one of the richest in the nation.

Thanks for reading.

  • As much as Georgia doesn't need anymore counties, I have to agree with the "north fulton" residents -- I have dealt with Fulton County government and it is very inept -- and let's not get started with Watershed Management.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Bryant5493 -- you write that you are from South Fulton -- how do you feel this "breakway" scenario will impact the SF community?

  • I don't really mind that North Fulton wants to recreate Milton County. When it happens, Fulton County's going to have reorganize itself, or become dissolved. Fulton County should've done better with the North Fulton tax dollars. If they had, the North Fulton residents wouldn't be in so much of uproar, to recreate a defunct county.

  • This is definitely one I will be watching.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Now that I'm getting more information about what would happen with the re-creation of Milton County, I'm against it. The reason being is that Atlanta and Fulton's governments would combine, and both, in my opinion, are inept.

But it will be interesting to see what will happen.

  • I agree.

I read a recent article that said the bill for this initiative is moving to the House for a preliminary vote.

This recent action has caused me to re-consider staying in Fulton County, period.

  • I can understand you reconsidering staying in Fulton County. If the Milton bill goes through and is voted in, Fulton would lose 38% of its income, and taxes for the remaining portion of Fulton would be sky high.

  • Yeah, hellacious traffic.

I agree, Fulton County should be able to budget their finances better, and not take so much from the nothern residents -- then not give them adequate services.

Yeah, we're surpassed only by Texas, in terms of counties; they have 254 and Texas is several times the size of Georgia.

  • I hate this part of town, traffic city.

But, they should break away from Fulton County, these people paying high taxes are basically being robbed by the rest of the county. Why do we need 159 counties anyway?
